Whin Hill Cottage Reviews

Difficult to understand heating and use of it. Double beds should be bigger. Beautiful house overall in a stunning village.
Andrew
The house is in a great location, two minutes walk to the sea and to the excellent local pub The Jolly Fisherman. The property has been developed to a high standard, with large and comfortable bedrooms including one on the ground floor. Most bedrooms have a connecting bathroom or en suite so perfect for a large family, or several couples on a get together. Offroad parking for 2 or 3 cars and a private garden with decking to enjoy the sunshine and views.
What a marvellous experience at Whin Hill Cottage! The cottage is situated in a very quiet but easily accessible location not far from Craster's main street. Beautifully presented, it was a pleasure to stay in such a wellappointed residence, and we were sorry to leave as we'd been unable to book a full week. Everything was very clean and well organised we'd definitely stay there again. The welcome pack was much appreciated, thank you especially with limited shopping facilities. There was ample car parking space for our SUV and the double gates enabled the fullyenclosed garden which my dog really enjoyed. Overall, a great place to stay, for people and their dogs alike!

This was our second visit, we loved it so much the first time. The house is modern, big, light, airy, tastefully designed and finished to a very high specification. The rooms are large and comfortable and extraordinarily well equipped. The garden is large and enclosed when the front gates are shut and suitable for dogs. The property is situated in a quiet and secluded location but is just a three minute walk from the wonderful Jolly Fisherman pub and the gorgeous harbour area of Craster. The fabulous Northumberland coast is all around. We have stayed in many holiday homes but this certainly counts among the very best. Warmly recommended!
I loved the location of Whin Hill being close to the coastal path, a picturesque harbour, and a lovely pub over looking the sea we didnt eat there however as its quite expensive The accommodation is very spacious and well equipped, we had a bit of an issue working the tv and couldnt find a manual. Our dog loved the spacious enclosed garden, the fence between Whin hill and the neighbour is quite low and as said previously an adventurous dog could jump over. I recommend the Village farm shop in Embleton if you want to treat yourself. I wouldnt hesitate to book the cottage again.
Beautiful house in the lovely fishing village of Craster. Great position with a nice big garden and very well appointed house. We would return in a heartbeat
Melody
Amazing holiday cottage, spacious, well equipped and furnished. The enclosed garden meant that the dog and our grandchildren were able to play outside safely. I think this is the first time weve spent as much if not more time at the cottage than out and about it was just so lovely to sit and relax in the garden
We really enjoyed our stay. The house is lovely and relaxing. The garden was great for our dog she liked to say hello over the hedge, to the dog next door and there was a sea view beyond some village buildings. It was clean and spacious. We particularly liked the lardercupboard in the kitchen, having 3 bathrooms between 4 bedrooms, wooden floors throughout and the convenience of the location. It is a very short stroll to the pub and the coastal path. There are beautiful beaches on the doorstep. Our only issue was that it gets hot upstairs we think it was due to the big water tank in the landing cupboard. Its probably lovely and cosy in the colder months. And the dishwasher was a bit hit and miss. But overall, we were very pleased and had a lovely stay here. We would book it again.
This property did not disappoint. From a very spacious kitchen, comfortable loungediner to clean, comfortable beds. It had everything. With a dog in our party the utility area was a great place to clean him up away from the kitchen. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and cooking utensils allowing us to cook a full Sunday roast to celebrate Easter Sunday. Allinall one of the best cottages weve stayed in.
The house is very good and in an excellent location. One problem is with the hot tap in the downstairs en suite. Whenever hot water is used anywhere in the house, the tap starts to whistle. The solution seems to be to turn the tap on and off again. The noise is so loud it woke us one night and we did not report it as we thought we had the solution above but then it recurred randomly without anyone using the water in the early hours of the final night again waking us up. This will probably need a plumber to look at it. One other small issue is that there is no battery in the Bluetooth speaker remote.
Rebecca
Wonderful stay perfect location, very comfortable and a home from home. Thank you!
Claire
The property is excellent, in a fantastic position and a minutes walk from a lovely pub. The only points we would like to raise are that the hoover didn't work and there was no floor mop so trying to keep on top of things when having two dogs with us for the weeks holiday was a little frustrating. There was only a small dust pan brush hence, we purchased a large brush so we could sweep the ground floor daily. The oven could also do with a deep clean, we cleaned it as best we could as it was very dirty and assume that previous guests have left it in an unsatisfactory condition. Only other point is, we noticed several reviews online regarding the water system and hot water. We had no problem with hot water but the noise from the system has not been addressed and does make a lot of noise when the hot water is running, probably just needs a new ball valve on the tank.
Great location and lovely house. However lack of hot water for the weekend and the dishwasher not working did spoil it a little. Heating engineer called and agreed the on the water issue yet the owner couldnt explain or accept responsibility, some guests left early so they could go home to shower and wash. No hot water or dishwasher meant all washing for 8 guests had to be with hot water from a kettle !!
Fantastic holiday the property was clean and very spacious would go back again
A lovely cottage although cottage might not be the best description for this lovely big house! Plenty of room for 7 adults and 2 dogs. The dogs loved the garden not sure the pigeons appreciated being chased off it. Comfortable, well equipped and spotlessly clean.
Samantha
Lovely holiday cottage, in a great location pub and coastline a few minutes walk from the front door. Craster is a lovely village, with some good walks from the front door, or easy access to the local area by car. The property is pretty well equipped, with lots of storage space in the kitchen and in the bedrooms. There was plenty of room for four adults, two children and 2 dogs. A few tweaks, and this would be a five star accommodation, The welcome pack was really disappointing some hotel style sachets of tea, coffee, UHT milk, sugar and biscuits. Usually properties of this standard offer at least a loaf of bread, milk, a bottle of wine, and various snacks. There's no shop in the village and is a drive away, so a few more bits would be really helpful. There were no pods for the coffee machine There was no antibacterial spray, or cloths provided to clean the sides Better deep cleaning of the less obvious places, such as the cutlery draw which was a bit grubby with a lot of crumbs None of these are a deal breaker, and wouldn't prevent a return visit. It really is a lovely place. Fixing the above would make it pretty much perfect.

The listing said we needed to take all cleaning products, which we did but found were provided also hand soap was provided. There wasnt a hairdryer in the twin room which was annoying and the bins were not as straight forward as they dont mention where to put the tin cans on them, though the guide book said to put in recycle bin . We ended up taking all glass bottles home as we couldnt find the recycle bin for them. We did have a lovely stay and the village was gorgeous. We would definitely come again
Heating control was difficult, the bedrooms were too hot in evening and lowering the temperature didnt have any effect. Plenty of hot water and comfortable temperatures in living area. Flagstone loose on front doorstep. Well appointed house and great location.
We had a very enjoyable stay at Whin Hill Cottage. It was plenty big enough for 8 adults and a dog. The kitchen was spacious and well equipped the bedrooms were light and airy, the loungedining area was comfortable and our dog loved running around in the large garden. The cottage was conveniently located, only a few minutes walk from the Jolly Fisherman and various paths along the coast and inland.
A lovely, wellequipped cottage. Very spacious. Spotlessly clean. Good location. Comfortable beds. Dogs loved the garden. All in all a lovely place to stay.
We've stayed in many cottages but this is one of the best by far. Spotlessly clean, decorated & furnished to a high standard and with every possible item you could want or need provided. The beds were comfortable with good quality linen, the showers worked well with plenty of hot water and the underfloor heating system was effective once we understood how to use it. The location was perfect, just a short walk to the Jolly Fisherman pub and its well known restaurant, close to the coastal path and to many other villages like Alnmouth. We will certainly stay here again when in the area.

A very comfortable spacious cottage, good beds, WIFI, TVs, and generally well equipped. An excellent location right in the heart of Craster. Yes we would recommend the cottage as a good place to stay. However, on the negative side the hot water cylinder is noisy and we had to resort to switching the power to it off when we went to bed and switching it back on in the morning so that it didn't disturb us during the night, plenty of hot water though. Also the blind in the main bathroom doesn't cover the window as the chain is broken. It was a bit off putting that when we arrived late on a November night all the radiators upstairs, except the landing one, had been turned off and it was very cold in the bedrooms and the welcome pack was rather basic with no fresh milk. We did enjoy our stay and found Turnbull's and M&S Simply Food in Alnwick very handy.
Had a fantastic week with the family and dogs at Whin Hill. Beautiful house, lots of room inside and out. Everything you need to enjoy your stay. Only issue is the noise from the cistern filling at night, wakes everybody. There is no details of what to recycle and when the bins need put out. Would be useful to have a brush !
Serena
The house is in a great location, clean and very well equipped. Our stay however was marred by the problems with the water system. Hot water was insufficient for 8 people and upon complaint it became clear that the system was faulty despite several calls to Sykes Cottages who handled things well and attempts to resolve it. The noise from the plumbing is awful and anyone using the taps or toilet during the night would cause disturbance. There must be a fundamental issue with the plumbing system which needs resolving. We appreciate a goodwill gesture made by the owners but wish we hadn't had to suffer these issues whilst on holiday.
Excellent comfortable, well equipped clean property in good location for walking or exploring the coast by car. Only critisism was noisy cold water plumbing system when flushing toilets not a big deal but not good in the middle of the night.
We had a wonderful stay in Craster. The house was beautiful and the location super. The downstairs bedroom and bathroom were perfect for our elderly parents. Thanks for a lovely stay! A couple of things to note the taps and toilet flushes were very loud and banging at times. As we were leaving the inside door handle to the front door loosened.
Large comfortable cottage in Craster, within easy reach of coastal path and village facilities.
