If you’re lured by those sea views on your doorstep, dune-backed Derrynane Beach is a crescent of white sand overlooking Abbey Island, where there’s an ancient burial ground and ruins of a long-forgotten medieval church. The beach is ideal for water sports and walks, while nearby Derrynane House was the childhood home of politician Daniel O'Connell and is also the location of an ancient Ogham Stone – the earliest form of writing in Ireland, dating back to the 4th century.
